Semaglutide and Women's Hormones — Cycle to Menopause

A confident woman representing womens health and GLP-1 care

GLP-1 weight treatment needs to account for contraception, pregnancy plans, menstrual changes and menopausal health. These medicines are not fertility or menopause treatments; semaglutide and tirzepatide have different pregnancy-planning instructions.

Contraception: semaglutide and tirzepatide

Tirzepatide can reduce oral hormonal contraceptive effectiveness. Its label advises a non-oral method or added barrier method for four weeks after starting and after every dose increase. That instruction should not automatically be attributed to semaglutide. Vomiting or diarrhea can also affect pill absorption; check the instructions for your contraceptive. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

These medicines are not used for weight loss during pregnancy. Semaglutide should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Tirzepatide needs its own planning discussion; do not copy another molecule’s schedule. Contact your prescriber promptly if you become pregnant. Breastfeeding requires product-specific assessment. Menstrual cycles, PCOS and menopause

Weight, nutrition and other factors can affect menstrual cycles. A cycle change does not show that the medicine is balancing hormones or acting as fertility treatment. During menopause, treatment choices should account for nutrition, strength, bone health and other therapies. Do not assume every bleeding change or symptom is caused by the GLP-1.

When to seek assessment

Seek assessment for bleeding after menopause, heavy or prolonged bleeding, new pelvic pain, unexpected missed periods or possible pregnancy. Severe pain, fainting or bleeding with marked weakness needs urgent care. Bring your full list of medicines, contraception and hormone treatments to the visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do semaglutide and tirzepatide have identical contraception instructions?

No. Tirzepatide has a specific precaution for oral hormonal contraception after starting and dose increases. Semaglutide has a separate pre-pregnancy washout recommendation. Review the exact product with your clinician.
